Hello class,

Tomorrow is our final class. I would like to collect a final digital version – PDF – of your booklet. For extra credit you can print them out and bind them as I showed in class last week. We will have a short quiz on the vocab words listed below. Good luck! One more day and you’ve made it through the semester. After the quiz it should be a celebration!

: Line or fold at which facing pages meet.

: the part of a book’s cover that encloses the inner side of the book’s pages and that faces outward when the book is shelved;

: placeholder text, usually it does not make sense.
Text column
: A rectangular object that controls the placement of text.
Indent
: set in from the margin; extra spaces (usually 5) at the beginning of a paragraph

: In composition, starting a page or ending a paragraph with a single word, or widow.
Typo
: misprint: a mistake in printed matter
River
: In typography, rivers, or rivers of white, are visually unattractive gaps appearing to run down a paragraph of text. They can occur with any spacing, though they are most noticeable with wide inter-word spaces caused by either full text justification or monospaced fonts.
Widow
: a single word or part of a word on a line by itself, ending a paragraph, or starting a page, frowned upon in good typography.
Orphan
: the first line of a paragraph that is set as the last line of a page or column
Leaders
:
Text wrap/ runaround
: the technique of flowing text around graphic elements.
Clipping path
: a means to make parts of an image opaque and parts of an image transparent. Usually it is used to “knock out” the background. It is also a way of changing the rectangular-shaped boundary of a bitmap image into a shape of your choice.
Pull quotes
: is a quotation or edited from an article that is typically placed in a larger typeface

We are moving into the final stretch. I know things are busy but three more weeks and you can all relax!!

The goal for this week is to finish off the cover and the back design for your layout.
We will add pull quotes.
We will focus on the design for the individual pages.
And we will begin to talk about paper and binding books.

Hello,

I have some good news. The Art Director at the Public Theater has permitted us to use their logo. She has also expressed interest in seeing your posters when they are complete (a nice opportunity). You can download an eps of the logo here: new_public_logo1.eps

Open the logo up in Illustrator. You can then copy and paste it into your InDesign file. The eps should allow you to change the color of the logo and get rid of the background.

I also want to mention that a few of you have had a number of absences to date. On the class syllabus it states that you are only permitted two absences in the semester. If you have missed more than two classes you need to have a conversation with me.

Hello class,

>> If you are working in CS5 you can save a draft of your Indesign file for CS4 by doing the following:
In CS5 go to File>Export, choose InDesign Markup (IDML) format and click save. This will create a file you can open up in InDesign CS4 and resave. If you do this make sure you have the original CS5 file saved in separate place as a back up.
