Week10 – GRA3611
Hello folks!
We are moving into crunch time…
Because of Sandy we will be missing one day of class. So time management is crucial in terms of making sure everything is finished within the remaining time of the semester:
Nov 21 – (today)
Nov 28
Dec 05
Dec 12
Dec 19 – Week 14 (final class – everything DUE)
InClass
This Weds will be devoted to in-class critique. I would like to collect your peer-assessment worksheet and I would like you to present:
-> You project concept
-> Product Name
-> Logo design/ identity
-> Product rendering
We will then use the time in class to work.
I would like to collect a PDF draft of your booklet the week we come back from Thanksgiving (next week). This should include:
1 Cover
2. Copyright page: your name, project name and date
3. Table of Content
4. Statement and description of problem / Design Concept – a summary of the solution, with stated goals and objectives of the project (DRAFT 2)
5. Historical overview – documentation of research highlighting historical context (DRAFT 2)
6. Assessment of current industry. Find at least three examples of products you feel are well presented in the marketplace. (They do not have to be the same subject matter as your product.) You should find examples to use as inspiration and guidance. (DRAFT 2)
7. Assessment of marketplace. How is your product unique to the marketplace? What other products are similar to yours and currently available? How will your product distinguish itself from competition? (DRAFT 2)
8. Final identity design (include logo clear-space details and size specifications. Look at the student examples that I provided in class for guidance on this.)
9. Style Guide (see handout – week9)
10. Product rendering – created in Illustrator
Homework
PDF draft of your booklet (see above).
Week10 – ADV1162
Hello!
DUE POSTERS – Everyone was supposed to send me a final PDF of your final poster over the week – thank you to all whose posters I did receive. Your hard work is noted and appreciated!
-> Unless I gave you permission to submit to me later, posters are to be printed on 12×18″ card stock paper with crop marks
-> bring Black 3/16” thick FOAM CORE trimmed FLUSH to the edge of the art work – if time permits we will mount them in class
-> If you still have to revise your poster based on the feedback you received, then you can email me a (high-res) PDF of your final Illustrator or Photoshop file
I must receive FINAL poster no later than 5PM on Tuesday November 20, 2012.
Because the file will likely be larger than you can send via email you can use either of the following free sites to send me your work:
www.yousendit.com
www.dropbox.com
In-Class
Presentations: Saul Bass, James Victore, Steve Brodner, Shadow Chen, & Matteo Bologna
Lesson – lesson
-> Smart Objects – Illustrator into Photoshop (Photoshop)
-> Working with scanned sketch work in Photoshop -> painting.
-> Retouching
-> Unlimited access to lynda.com for you until January. Lynda.com provides online tutorials for the software covered in these and other classes. Please check your CityTech email account for more information.
Project 2: Book Cover Design
Please review the following list of books. I would like you to select a source book for which you will develop a cover design. All selected books are public domain titles and have text readily available on-line through multiple sources. I recommend checking Project Gutenberg (www.gutenberg.org) for full-text downloads on these titles.
Project Specs:
Cover designs MUST include the book title and author’s name; you are not required to feature any additional text.
Dimensions: 6 x 9”
Bleed: .125”
400dpi format
RGB
Photoshop or Illustrator
Looking at a complete book cover (wrapped around a book) laid flat you will see the back cover, spine, and front cover, in that order from left to right. So allowing .125 for trim around each edge, your width formula is .125 + cover size + spine width + cover size + .125.
The formula for spine width is page width ( typically.002252) times final number of pages. So for a 300 page book the spine width would be .68 (.002252 x 300).
Homework:
1. Select a book: Author and Title
2. Visit Barnes and Nobles online and research book cover designs in the Best-selling list for your genre: http://www.barnesandnoble.com/u/Classic-Books-Barnes-and-Noble-Classics/379003245
Week9 – GRA3611
Hello – Welcome to Week9!
In-Class
After an Illustrator lesson we will use the time in class to work on your projects. You should meet with your partner and have them complete the peer-assessment work sheet. The goal being to have everything ready to show for next week’s in-class critique.
Lab time to work on wherever you are with project.
-> Logo design/ identity
-> Project Deck layout
-> Product design/ Packaging
Examples
Here are three PDF student examples of booklets that you can download and take a look at for guidance and inspiration: STUDENTEXAMPLES
Lesson
-> Brushes
-> Perspective Grid. Here is a good follow up tutorial relating to today’s lesson: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gp6kR3Hs8vI
Homework
1. Prepare for inclass presentation/critique next week.
2. Continue to set up your project deck (the booklet) in InDesign. I recommend speaking with the printer you intend to work with – in the next few days to double check that the booklet dimensions that you set up, will be possible to print and bind. They should also be able to tell you the cost for printing and binding. (See printer suggestions above.)
I would like to collect a PDF draft of your booklet the week we come back from Thanksgiving. This should include:
1 Cover
2. Copyright page: your name, project name and date
3. Table of Content
4. Statement and description of problem / Design Concept – a summary of the solution, with stated goals and objectives of the project
5. Historical overview – documentation of research (highlights of historical context)
6. Assessment of current industry. Find at least three examples of products you feel are well presented in the marketplace. (They do not have to be the same subject matter as your product.) You should find examples to use as inspiration and guidance.
7. Assessment of marketplace. How is your product unique to the marketplace? What other products are similar to yours and currently available? How will your product distinguish itself from competition?
8. Final identity design (include logo clear-space details and size specifications. Look at the student examples that I provided in class for guidance on this.)
9. Style Guide (see handout – GRA3611-StyleGuide)
10. Product rendering – created in Illustrator
